The reverse of the coin features The Vitruvian Man - one of the most recognizable works created by Leonardo da Vinci in approximately 1490. It is also known as known also as “The proportions of the human body according to Vitruvius”. The drawing depicts a man in two superimposed positions with his arms and legs apart and inscribed in a circle and square. It represents da Vinci’s concept of the ideal human body proportions and is kept in the Galleria dell’Accademia, in Venice, Italy.

The obverse depicts a much more modern invention done by Wilhelm Röntgen in 1895 – the X-rays. He discovered their medical use when he made a picture of his wife’s hand on a photographic plate formed due to X-rays. The photograph of his wife’s hand was the first photograph of a human body part using X-rays. The obverse also features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions: “ELIZABETH II” – the name of the Queen, “COOK ISLANDS” – the issuing country, “5 DOLLARS” – the face value and “2021” – the year of issue.
