The real bee behind the name

The Lucifer bee, scientifically named Megachile (Hackeriapis) lucifer, is a native Australian species identified in Western Australia’s Goldfields. Its most memorable feature is the pair of tiny horn-like projections on the female’s face.

Those unusual horns helped inspire its name. Dr Kit Prendergast, a researcher associated with Curtin University, encountered the bee while surveying a critically endangered wildflower in the Bremer Range. Curtin announced the species in November 2025, bringing attention to a remarkable insect and the importance of understanding its habitat.

The name also carries an unexpected connection: lucifer means “light-bringer” in Latin. For a species whose appearance suggests something darker, it is a fitting reminder of how much there is still to learn about Australia’s native bees.

The coin’s design invites collectors to examine the Lucifer bee as they might a page from a natural history sketchbook.

At its centre, the bee is shown from above, wings extended. The fine lines of the wings, the textured body and the distinctive horned face give the central portrait its character.
