During his third year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Harry Potter encounters the dreaded Dementors – soul-sucking, wraithlike creatures that guard Azkaban, the notorious prison where the most dangerous witches and wizards are detained. Sirius Black, one of the prison’s most dangerous criminals, has escaped and the Dementors are sent to Hogwarts to safeguard the school.
The boy wizard first meets a Dementor on the Hogwarts Express and the experience dredges up painful memories from his past. During the school year, the new Defence Against the Arts teacher, Professor Remus Lupin, helps Harry master a powerful defensive spell that repels these creatures.
This UK coin celebrates Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban through a stylised reverse design capturing the iconic moment in which the boy wizard learns the Patronus Charm. Remastered by Bella Biggs, a product designer at The Royal Mint, the stylised design is available on a gold Proof edition, a 1oz silver Proof edition and a Brilliant Uncirculated edition of the coin. The design also appears on the reverse of a silver Proof and Brilliant Uncirculated edition that both feature colour printing.
