Australian coins are undergoing a transformation not seen for seventy years. The effigy of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is being replaced by an effigy of His Majesty King Charles III on the obverse of Australian coins. The Royal Australian Mint commemorates this historic numismatic turning point with this exquisite and historic 2024 Six-Coin Fine Silver Proof Year Set – Change of Monarch.

Tradition holds that Australian legal tender coins bear the effigy of the Monarch on their obverse. A tradition that these six coins pay homage to as we commemoratethe change of Monarch. Portraits of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Mary Gillick, Arnold Machin, Raphael Maklouf, Ian Rank-Broadleyand Jody Clark appear on five of the coins while the new effigy of His Majesty King Charles III by Daniel Thorne appears on the sixth. In keeping with tradition the new portrait of The King will face left, the opposite direction from the effigies of his mother.

This Royal AustralianMint set commemorates this historic numismatic turning point by presenting past and present Royal effigies on the obverses of each coin. Together they honor the historic reign of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and celebrate our new Monarch, His Majesty King Charles III.

Lunar New Year is celebrated throughout the world, with coins considered traditional gifts. Featuring the noble and confident Dragon on the reverse and the Lunar calendar wheel on the obverse, this coin is an auspicious gift or collectible. The Dragon is the fifth of the twelve signs in the Chinese Zodiac. According to legend twelve animals participated in a race across a river to allow the Jade Emperor to establish the order of the signs of the Chinese horoscope. Everyone thought that the Dragon would come first as it could fly, but it stopped to help some villages along the way. It also felt sorry for the Rabbit and decided to help it ashore first, allowing the Rabbit to take fourth place.

The reverse of this 2024 $5 Fine Silver Proof Domed Coin features the mythical Dragon surrounded by auspicious clouds. The obverse bears the Lunar calendar wheel, rotated so that the Dragon is show at the top, along with the 2024 Memorial Obverse features the effigy of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II sculpted by Jody Clark, and her reign dates.
