From the moment Christopher Columbus first set foot in America, Europe’s most powerful nations cast their eyes upon the New World where untold riches were just waiting for the taking. Among the countries that played a leading world in the shipping trade between Europe and the New World was the Netherlands.

This commemorative is an official restrike of the famous 1761 “Scheepjesschelling” trading coin. It depicts a mighty sailing ship on the obverse while the reverse shows the provincial Coat of Arms on the reverse. In fact, the message that was engraved on the coin reads, “ITA. RELINQUENDA. UT. ACCEPTA,” a proverb loosely translated that means “Leave it like you got it,” which basically means “Hands Off!”.

Each 2023-dated Ship Shilling commemorative was struck by the prestigious Royal Dutch Mint in a full ounce of highly pure 99.9% fine silver and measures 38.7 mm in diameter.

The maximum mintage for the 2023 Netherlands One-Ounce Silver Ship Shilling Proof has been set at just 750 for the entire world.
